Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean, just south of India. It’s rich in history and culture. I’ll tell you about some popular places to visit in Sri Lanka! Sri Lanka is the pearl in the Indian Ocean. If you’ve looked at a map before, you can notice that it’s south of India. That means it’s fairly close to many other countries in Asia and Africa, so I’m sure everyone will be able to find flights fairly easily.
Sri Lanka has a lot in common with India in terms of culture, language, and dress. For instance, a lot of Sri Lankan people wear saris. That’s because when the Europeans came to Sri Lanka, they called it Ceylon. They saw the island was very profitable for them, regarding spices and other things. To make more profit from Sri Lanka, the British brought over a lot of Indians to work on their plantations. Many Indians stayed in Sri Lanka and married into the local community. This is why many families have Indian heritage today!
If you’re planning on going to Sri Lanka soon for a vacation, you’ll want to know what some fun places are. Let’s start with the city of Colombo!
Colombo is the largest city in Sri Lanka. Tourism is actually on the rise in Colombo! You can find some budget hostels and guest houses here, and there are also five-star hotels for those who want to splurge.
The Dutch and Portuguese made this city what it was today back in the 16th century. They brought over architects, artists, and other skilled craftsmen so they could build beautiful landmarks. You’ll find many interesting buildings like clock towers, churches, and forts here. The Galle Face Green is also a popular destination in Colombo. This is a very beautiful park with nice walking paths, playgrounds, and even a cafe. You can bring your family to enjoy the wonderful scenery!
Next, we’ll go to the city of Kandy. If you’ve been looking at a map of Sri Lanka, you can see that it’s pretty far south of Colombo. It takes about five hours to drive to Kandy from Colombo! Fewer people are living in this region because it’s not as hot and humid here. This is where many Sri Lankan families go on vacation, especially during their holidays!
Kandy has been around since the 13th century. It’s very cosmopolitan now, although it still has a rich history. You can check out the World Heritage Sites here. You’ll find gem shops full of beautiful things as well as food stalls for those who love to eat.
